The Mississippi Adolescent Center promotes and supports a client and family-centered approach to care. The purpose of this policy is to define and set expectations regarding persons visiting clients and to recognize our commitment to provide visitation in accordance with our non-discrimination policy, which provides access regard to race, sex, national origin, disability, age, religion and sexual orientation and/or legally protected classification. It also provides a mechanism to issue identification to authorized individuals visiting a client.

Philosophy:

The diagnosis and treatment of clients’ illness can result in a range of stressful circumstaces for clients, their families and significant others. Most clients and families require assistance and support, at different times in different ways from people important to them. This support may involve someone to provide companionship, or someone to provide care in the home after treatment. Whenever possible, we recognize and honor our client’s wishes regarding visitation.

Procedures:
  • Families are requested to give at least 24 hour notice of any upcoming on-campus visit or day-pass. Contact the Social Worker during working hours (8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday). If the Social Worker is unavailable you may leave your message with the switchboard or another Social Worker who is available.
  • All over-night or extended visit pass requests should be made at least 7 days in advance of your planned pick-up date. If your child is prescribed any type of medication, it must be ordered from our pharmacy. Note: Federal regulations prohibit medications to be dispensed by nursing staff. Failure to give proper notice could result in your pass request not being approved.
  • MAC allows eight-four (84) days/nights off campus for visitation per fiscal year (July 1-June 30). We require a minimum of 30 days between overnight visits. A maximum of fourteen (14) consecutive days with your family member is allowed per scheduling.
  • Please provide us with the date and time of both the pick-up and return of the client. Also indicate any special clothing needs you may have.
  • Upon arrival to the Center, go to the administration area to receive a Pass Authorization. You will be given any medications the client is taking at that time and relevant instruction by the nurse.
  • Upon your return to the Center with the client go to the administration area to check the client in and return any unused medication. The nurse will, upon arrival, take any unused medication you may have and perform the return medical assessment. It is important for you to give any returned medication directly to the nurse; however, if nursing staff is involved with an emergency or you are extremely pushed for time, you may leave the client in the care of the Shift Supervisor and give any unused medication to the Shift Supervisor.

Medications:

Medications will be packaged by the Pharmacy Department in bottles depending on the amount needed. Medication will be packaged separately. The bottle(s) will be clearly marked with instructions. Medication will be provided for the length of the visit. All unused medication should be returned. If the visit is longer than anticipated, you will need to contact the nursing staff for additional medication.

Visitation Hours:

While you are welcome to schedule visits with your family member at any time, there are times that are better than others. Clients receive educational training programs 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday), lunch 11:30 p.m. - 12:45 p.m., and dinner 5:30p.m. - 6:45 p.m. daily.

On-Campus Visits:

Many families enjoy on-campus visits with their family member. Please note a Pass Authorization Form still needs to be completed prior to the visit. You are required to call ahead to inform your Social Worker of the on-campus visit so that we may notify the dormitory so that the client will be ready for your visit.

Communication:

The assigned Social Worker is the primary family contact at MAC. Please refer all questions, concerns, suggestions or problems to your assigned Social Worker. We will be happy to assist you with your concerns.

Many steps are involved with checking out and returning a client to the Mississippi Adolescent Center. We encourage family visitation with clients and hope this guide will provide you with information that will enhance your visits and allow us to provide optimal behavioral programming for your individual in our care.
